Kidney stones consists of formations of calculi or stones in the interior of the kidney. It may also occur in the urinary bladder, but less frequently. The kidney stones form because the substances normally dissolved in the urine precipitate and accumulate in a solid mass.

Most kidney stones are formed of calcium oxalate, magnesium ammonium phosphate, calcium phosphate, or urates.

During an attack of kidney stone pain, painkillers are a necessity. However, if the pain is mild and you can manage it, try using strong antispasmodic herbs (see below) to relax the ureter. The ureter is the tube that connects each kidney to the bladder. To minimize damage from the moving stone, try herbs that are demulcent, which forms protective coatings on the urinary passage. Therefore, while the stone's are passing out of the body, such herbs are usually all you will need to ease the pain while it passes.

To prevent calcium from crystallizing into a stone in the urinary tract, try herbs that contain compounds called anthraquinones (see below), which binds with the calcium preventing it from becoming a stone. These herbs have a laxative effect; if this is the case, then lowering the dose is recommended.

Symptoms of Kidney stones
