Home Remedies for Insomnia - Natural Cure for Insomnia
"What If a Good *NIGHT'S SLEEP* Was Only a Few Hours Away - Without Pills?"
Insomnia ranks right behind the common cold, stomach disorders, and headaches as the reasons people seek a doctor's help. In a Gallup poll of more than 1,000 adults, one-third complained that they woke in the middle of the night and couldn't fall back to sleep.
There are a few commonsense approaches that you can use to try to correct the problem yourself. "Sleep is a natural physiological phenomenon, but it's also a learned behavior." - Michael Stevenson, Ph.D.
Symptoms of insomnia
- difficulty falling or staying asleep
- frequent nighttime waking
- waking up too early in the morning
- waking up feeling unrefresh
Home Remedies for Insomnia
Set a rigid sleep schedule 7 days a week. Sleep medicine experts insist on people trying to be as regular as possible, says Merrill M. Mitler, Ph.D.
Don't waste your time in bed. As you grow older, you body needs less sleep. Most newborn babies sleep up to 18 hours a day. By the time they're 10 years old, their need usually drops to 9 or 10 hours. There is no "normal" amount of sleep for an adult. The average is 7 to 8 hours, but some people operate well on as few as 5 hours. Go to bed only when you're sleepy.
Set aside some quiet time before bed. An hour or two before going to bed, sit down for at least 10 minutes or so.
Avoid stimulants after twilight. Coffee, colas, black tea, green tea, and even chocolate contain caffeine, the powerful stimulant that can keep you up, so try not to consume them past 4:00 p.m., says Dr Mitler. Do not smoke either; nicotine is also a stimulant.
Treatment with drug medication for insomnia
Eszopiclone (Lunesta) is a non-benzodiazepine, oral, sedative drug (“sleeping pill”) that is used for treating insomnia. According to the National Institutes of Health, more than 50 million Americans suffer from insomnia. Symptoms of insomnia include difficulty falling asleep, awakening frequently during the night, waking up too early, an inability to fall back to sleep, or awakening in the morning not feeling refreshed. Most drugs that have been used to treat insomnia are benzodiazepines, for example, flurazepam (Dalmane), lorazepam (Ativan), triazolam (Halcion), and temazepam (Restoril). Zolpidem (Ambien) was the first non-benzodiazepine approved for insomnia in over 20 years. Eszopiclone is unique in that it is the only drug used for insomnia that has been shown to be safe and effective for up to six months. Eszopiclone was approved by the FDA in December, 2004.
Side Effects: Patients taking eszopiclone or any other sedative drug may develop dependence on the drug for sleep and experience withdrawal symptoms when the drug is discontinued. The most common side effects of eszopiclone are dizziness and loss of coordination.
