Heartburn is a painful or burning sensation in the esophagus, just below the breastbone caused by the regurgitation of gastric acid. The pain often rises in the chest and may radiate to the neck, throat, or angle of the jaw. Heartburn, unknown to most -- can be the cause of chronic cough, and in some cases imitate asthma. This condition has nothing to with the heart despite its name "heartburn". However, some heart problems do have similar symptoms to that of heartburn, but it is so named due to the area of the chest where the burning sensation is felt.

Try not to overeat. The acid in your stomach can be forced up into your esophagus when there is too much food in the stomach. The more you put into your stomach the greater chance you have of acid coming back up. Although, there can be many causes of heartburn, overeating is one of the main reasons.

Stay away from greasy foods. Greasy, fried and fatty foods tend to need more acid to be released into the stomach to aide digestion. If you are suffering from severe heartburn, I would suggest staying away from meats and dairy products.

Spicy foods should not enter your stomach. Peppers and other hot foods should be avoided. However, I know plenty of people with heartburn that can eat spicy foods with no problem. This one is a judgment call. If it bothers you, stop eating it.

Try not to over indulge in citric juices. Oranges and lemons are highly acidic. Try not to drink too much of these two, and other citric juices.

Try over-the-counter antacids. Maalox or Mylanta will bring fast relief from your suffering. They work by helping to neutralize the acids in the stomach. However, I do not recommend this route every time you have heartburn. The reason is -- the stomach produces acid to digest foods, so why be counterproductive and neutralize it. The best way to deal with heartburn is with lifestyle changes, and a healthy diet.

Some people reach for milk, but I would not recommend it. Milk contains fats and proteins that stimulate the secretion of acid. It may feel good going down, but you are making the situation worse in the long term.

Stay away from mints. A mint for some strange reason relaxes the esophageal sphincter. This little valve keeps the acid in the stomach. Causing this valve to relax or malfunction will make your heartburn worse. Other foods that cause the valve to relax are beer, wine, alcoholic beverages, and tomatoes.

Chocolate should be eliminated. One of the worst foods anyone can eat if he or she suffers with heartburn is chocolate. It is loaded with fat and caffeine, two of the worse things to eat if you have heartburn.

Stay away from carbonated drinks.

Do not eat within two hours before bedtime.

Stay away from stress. Stress increases acid production within the stomach. Learn to relax more by taking long walks or exercise.

Read the labels if you take prescription medications. Some of the side effects associated with them include heartburn. If you suspect that a medication is causing your heartburn, check with your physician.

When to call a doctor for heartburn

If you are experiencing regular attacks of heartburn for no apparent reason on a regular basis, it is time to see your physician. If you are suffering attacks three to four times a week for over a month, you might have a problem. Heartburn can also be a sign of an ulcer.

If you experience any of these symptoms after an attack with heartburn, get to a hospital as soon as possible. This could be a sign of a heart attack.

Difficulty or pain when swallowing
Blood inside of vomit
Stool that is bloody or black
Light-headedness or vertigo
Pain in neck and shoulder

Heartburn is usually supposed to be at its worse after meals, but if it is worse before meals; then it might be an ulcer.
