Acid Reflux happens when some of the digestive juices normally found in

the stomach back up into the esophagus, the pipe between the stomach and the mouth. These juices include hydrochloric acid, the corrosive substance used in industry to clean metal.

The stomach has a protective lining that shields it from the acid, but the esophagus has no such lining. That's why upwardly mobile stomach acid burns, sometimes so badly that you may think you're having a heart attack.

Symptoms of acid reflux

  • Heartburn (a burning feeling rising from the stomach or lower chest up towards the neck).
  • Regurgitation (bringing food back up into the mouth).
  • Chest pain.
  • Difficulty in swallowing (dysphagia).
  • Hoarseness, dental erosion and asthma (because acidic juices can make their way into the throat, mouth and air passages of the lungs).
Treatment with drug medication for acid reflux

Metoclopramide is a "prokinetic" agent that increases muscle tone of the lower esophagus sphincter. The lower esophagus sphincter, located between the esophagus and stomach, normally prevents reflux of acid and other stomach contents into the esophagus. In patients with Gastroesophageal Reflux (GERD), a weakened lower esophagus sphincter allows reflux of stomach acid into the esophagus, causing heart burn and acid damage to the esophagus (peptic esophagitis). Metoclopramide decreases stomach acid reflux by strengthening the lower esophagus sphincter. Like cisapride (Propulsid), metoclopramide also hastens the stomach emptying of solid and liquid meals into the intestines. Rapid emptying of meals also help decrease the reflux of stomach acid and other contents into the esophagus.

Side Effects: Metoclopramide can have nervous system side effects, such as depression, anxiety, sedation, restlessness, and insomnia. Parkinson patients can experience worsening of symptoms with metoclopramide. Metoclopramide may impair the mental and/or physical abilities to drive or operate machinery. Rarely, metoclopramide can cause involuntary muscle movements, facial grimacing, and dystonic reactions resembling tetanus. Since metoclopramide accelerates stomach emptying, it can increase absorption and effects of other medications.

Do not overeat! Stomach acids can be forced up into the esophagus when there's too much food in your belly.

Stay away from greasy fried foods

Acid Reflux Food To Avoid

Coffee, alcohol, and excessive amounts of Vitamin C supplements are stimulants of gastric acid secretion. Taking these before bedtime especially can promote evening reflux. Calcium containing antacids are in this group.

Foods high in fats and smoking reduce lower esophageal sphincter competence, so avoiding these tends to help, as well. Fat also delays emptying of the stomach.

Having more but smaller meals also reduces the risk of GERD, as it means there is less food in the stomach at any one time.

avoid eating for 2 hours before bedtime

avoid soft drinks

avoid chocolate and peppermint

avoid spicy foods

avoid acidic foods like oranges and tomatoes (however, they are okay when fresh.)

avoid cruciferous vegetables: onions, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, spinach, brussel sprouts

milk and milk-based products contain calcium and fat, so should be avoided before bedtime.

However, following this list of foods directly is not 100% accurate for some have a more serious case of GERD than others. Thus, it is up to an individual to decide which foods bother them and which ones do not. But practical advice offered by many sources is to avoid food for a minimum of 2 hours before bedtime and, also, not lying down after a meal.
