Treatment For Bursitis

Bursitis is an inflammation of the lining of a bursa. Bursas are membranous sacs or pockets situated near a joint, between tendons, or between a tendon and a bone. Their linings secrete a lubricating fluid that reduces friction as the tendons slide by one another or slide over a bone.

Bursitis may develop below the kneecap and in the shoulder, elbow, and hip. Injury or overuses of the muscles whose tendons are in contact with the bursa cause the bursar lining to become inflamed. The result is swelling due to an increase of fluid, pain on movement, and tenderness on pressure. In chronic bursitis, calcium salts may be deposited in the walls of the bursa.

Bursitis may clear up in a day or two; however, it frequently recurs. Rest, together with hot and cold compresses, may provide relief. It is important that you retain full motion in those joints where bursitis occurs. Should your shoulder be affected, lean forward and allow your arm to swing loosely in a rotary movement. If the bursitis continues, see your physician.

Natural Treatments For Bursitis

Ice – During the first twenty-four hours after the pain starts, ice is the best treatment. Ice reduces the inflammation that is causing the pain. A frozen bag of peas or mixed vegetables is better than ice, because the bag of peas or mixed vegetables can mold themselves to the exact form of the affected area.

Omega-3 fatty acids – Decrease the inflammation with fatty acids that are found in fish and flaxseed oil. People who consume adequate amounts of omega-3 fatty acids will not be as easy to get bursitis. Try to consume fish at least twice a week. Fish that you should focus on include herring, bluefin tuna, mackerel, and salmon. These fish are loaded with omega-3’s. If you do not like fish, then taking fish oil or flaxseed oil supplements is ok also.
