The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. Antibiotics are powerless against it because the flu is a viral infection. No pharmaceuticals or over the counter medicines can prevent or cure the flu. Although the flu season rides in on winter’s back — it’s not the cold weather that causes all the problems. It is the time spent indoors with and around sick people.

The flu is very infectious. Stay at home from work for at least one day after your temperature returns to normal. Keep the kids at home from school until they have fully recovered.

Bed rest is essential in treating the flu. When resting — you allow the body all the energy it needs to combat the virus.

Drinking plenty of liquids is very important. Fluids provide needed nutrients when your too weak to eat. The best thing is to dilute fruit juices with water.

Relieve sore throat by sucking on something sweet. Hard candy or lozenges keeps your throat moist so it feels better.

A humidifier may also be helpful if there is chest congestion and nasal stuffiness.

Soaking your feet in hot water helps widen blood vessels, thereby diverting blood flow from your head to your feet, which will relieve congestion.

Make sure that your room has plenty of fresh air at all times.

Back rubs may help your immune system to fight the flu, and it is very comforting.
