Low blood sugar or hypoglycemia comes on rapidly and may be a result of too much exercise, skipping or delaying a meal, too much insulin, or too large a dose of hypoglycemic medications. The body runs out of fuel and energy when there is an inadequate supply of glucose in the blood. These symptoms can bring about serious problems if one is driving a car, working with heavy machinery, or swimming.
In addition, the individual becomes ill at ease, breaks out in a sweat, and feels weak and shaky. Headaches, hunger, slurred speech, hazy vision, confusion, and irritability are among other symptoms experienced. Therefore, the individual may fall into a hypoglycemic coma if left untreated. Before it gets to that, a person can drink a glass of sweet fruit juice or a candy bar to relieve the problem quickly. Drinking milk or eating a slice or two of bread releases glucose into the blood stream slowly. If one is in the care of a doctor – the doctor may administer an injection of glucagon to raise the blood sugar. Usually, when an attack of hypoglycemia occurs, it indicates a poorly regulated diabetic.
Other conditions that may prompt toward low blood sugar include fasting, congestive heart failure, and certain types of cancer, chronic kidney failure, excessive alcohol intake, high fevers, stomach surgery, and emotional problems. If you suspect hypoglycemia, it is wise to see a physician.

- The use of Chinese herbs such as ginseng promotes more energy in the spleen and pancreas system. However, the type to use is the Chinese or the Korean, not the American or the Siberian ginseng. The latter does not have as potent an effect.
Chinese and Korean ginseng help the liver convert the substance glycogen to glucose, or blood sugar. According to herbalists, you should take it for two to four weeks before you begin to notice results. If you begin to notice results, or you do not see results after several weeks, stop taking it.
- If you cannot find the right ginseng, or it is simply too expensive, you can try the herb codonopsis. You can find it under the name dang shen or bellflower as well. It works just like ginseng, however, more slowly. It is cheaper than ginseng at one-tenth the price.
- Just like the flag, the typical American diet is red white and blue. Americans eat too much fatty, fiber-free red meat and too many refined carbohydrates like white sugar and white bread, which can result in the brain-numbing blues of hypoglycemia. To remedy this, eat a more low fat, mostly vegetarian diet. Include fish, natural high fiber foods, grains, vegetables, fresh fruits, legumes, seeds, and nuts into your diet. You can also help balancing blood sugar levels by snacking on those foods in between meals.

Adapting to a diet that provides more protein sources and limits carbohydrates such as white sugar and flour strengthens the spleen and the pancreas. Try to eat more tofu and other soy products as well as, more chicken, turkey, fish, and beans.
