Bunions are tender, painful distensions caused by inflammation of the soft tissues and bone at the outer edge of the base of the big toe. The big toe bends toward the little toe and may overlap the second toe. The skin over the protrusion rubs against the shoe and forms a callus. Bunions usually develop at the same time on both feet. Hereditary factors include a wide foot, muscle imbalance, and relaxed ligaments. Tight-fitting, pointed, high-heeled shoes seem to force the toes into this abnormal position. The longer the irritation continues, the greater the deformity.
Footbaths, rest, and cutting away the shoe at the site of the bunion will relieve the pain in most cases. You should wear shoes of such size and shape that allow the big toe to assume its normal straightforward position. Placing padding between the first and second toes will help push the big toe toward its more normal position. Night splints are available commercially. In severe cases, surgical repair may be the only satisfactory solution.
Natural Treatment for Bunions
Castor Oil – Rubbing the bunion with castor oil can help reduce the swelling and pain. After a foot soak, rub the oil on the bunion, then wrap the toe in a clean cloth to keep the oil on the toe.
Home Remedies for Bunions
Ice – Apply ice to the bunion for 10 minutes at a time. Do this for about three to four days when the bunion pain acts up. Ice is a very effective way to relieve the ache of an irritated bunion.
Aspirin – Put three or four crushed aspirins into a basin of warm water and soak your feet for ten to fifteen minutes or longer if you desire. Soaking a bunion in aspirin and warm water is very effective in relieving the pain and the swelling.
