Age spots are blemishes on the skin connected to aging and exposure to ultra-violet radiation from the sun. Liver spots, sunspots, lentigos, or senile/solar lentigines are all names also associated with age spots. They vary in color from light brown to black and are located in areas most often exposed to the sun, mainly the hands, face, shoulders, arms and forehead. From the age of forty onwards, the skin is less able to regenerate from sun exposure and age spots are very common in this older age group, particularly in those who enjoy being out in the sunshine. However, emotional stress can cause age spots to flourish amongst certain individuals.
Age Spots Natural Remedies
Slice up a few lemons and place them on your age spots for about 10 to 20 minutes once or twice a day. Within about 6 to 12 weeks you should begin to see a difference in your spots as they get lighter. The age spots are lightened due to the acid in the lemon.
Avoid the sun as much as possible. During the summer time it would be wise to wear enough clothing to keep your skin away from the suns ultraviolet radiation. If you have yard work or some type of outdoor activity, I would suggest you do it in the early morning or the evening when the sun is not at its strongest.
If your age spots are not that big or too dark, over the counter bleaching agents could help fade them away. Over the counter products like Porcelana or Palmer’s Skin Success Cream, which contain 2 percent hydroquinone, the best known active ingredient used in bleaching creams.
If you are going to the beach or are going to be in the sun for an extended amount of time you should wear a hat with a 4 inch wide brim to keep the rays off of your face and neck.
Protect your lips. Most people do not think about protecting their lips from age spots, but they appear there too. Apply lip balm with an SPF of 15 to 30 before going outside.
When to call a doctor for age spots
If your age spot does not respond to home remedies or if you have age spots that bleed, itches, tingles, or changes in size or color, it is time to see your doctor. Some types of skin cancers like melanoma, can look like age spots.
Always protect yourself from the sun. Age spots are caused by too much sun exposure, so the chances of getting skin cancer is greatly increased. Staying out of excess sun will limit or delete your chances of developing age spots, and/or skin cancer.
Fade age spots
Try finding a wart remover by the name of Wart Stick which contains 40 percent salicylic acid, which is also the beta hydroxy acid that physicians use to combat wrinkles. Apply it just before you go to sleep. This is not a quick fix, and may take eight to twelve months to see results.
- Help fade age spots with a solution of the oils of lemon and benzoin. They have properties that are good for bleaching. Mix 2 to 3 drops of either oils with a carrier oil, preferably a nut oil, then apply on the spot 2 times a day.
- Try finding a health and beauty product that contains a licorice extract and glycolic acid, both work really well together to lessen or remove age spots. Glycolic acid is a derivative of natural sugar acids from citrus, papaya, and additional foods. It exfoliates the upper layer of the skin while the job of bleaching the spot is left up to the licorice extract.
- Lighten age spots with natural bleach consisting of yogurt and honey. Add a teaspoon of honey to a teaspoon of yogurt and mix carefully. Put the mixture on the spot and let it dry. Wash off after thirty minutes. Apply this mixture to the spot at least once a day.
