In many cases, you can feel a sinus infection coming, therefore, instead of waiting around for it to hit you full blast – do something to prevent it. Below are a few things you can do to help keep the beast at bay.

1. Try to keep the air in your home moist by getting a humidifier or an air conditioner, which regulates the temperature during hot and cold weather.

3. Strong fumes and chemicals can also irritate the lining of the sinus cavity, thus, causing a sinus infection. If you live close to an area that have irritants in the air, then it might be wise to move if you can.

4. Sinus infections are also triggered by alcohol consumption because it inflames the nasal and sinus membranes, which leave them exposed to irritation. Drinking in moderation is the key to help reduce the chances of getting a sinus infection induced by alcohol consumption.

5. If you smoke and you continually get sinus infections, it is time to quit. Smoking irritates the sinus lining, which inhibits draining of the mucus, thus, making you feel congested. Upon quitting, it will also be wise for you to stay away from second hand smoke.

6. People who travel a lot should cut down if possible on the amount of time flown from one area to the next. This is because bubbles of air within the body expand as the air pressure in the plane reduces. When this takes place, it could result in the blockage of the Eustachian tubes causing your nose to clog during the plane’s ascent or descent. If you have to fly, be sure to bring with you a decongestant nose drop or inhaler and use this before the flight.

7. Staying hydrated is another crucial step in preventing sinus infections. Drink plenty of water, juice, tea, or chicken soup. Liquids will replenish what the body lost.

8. Most sinus infections are caused by viral or bacterial infections; therefore, practicing good hygiene plays a major role in preventing it. You should take showers twice a day and wash your hands each time you go to the bathroom. People who cover their mouth after a sneeze should wash their hands also, because the germs remain on your hands.

9. Milk is also a culprit in promoting sinus problems. Although milk is a good source of calcium, it is no friend of the sinuses. According to studies, too much milk can thicken your mucus and cause nasal passages to narrow, which leads to headache and sinus pain.

10. Getting a flu shot every year is also a good sinus infection prevention method.

11. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. These foods are rich in antioxidants that boost your immune system and help your body resist infection.

12. Try to limit or eliminate stress in your life. Stress weakens your ability to fight of infections. Therefore, getting sufficient rest and relaxation is very important to prevent sinus infection.

13. Add supplements and/or multivitamins to your daily diet.
