How to Get Rid of A Sinus Infection

If you ever had a sinus infection, you know how uncomfortable it can make you feel. Fortunately, there are things you can do to feel better and stop it from getting worse.

The first thing you should do is try some home remedies that are geared to stopping sinus infections. Remedies for sinus infections include steam therapy, drinking plenty of fluids, getting enough rest, and using heat packs among other things.

Orange juice and water are among the best fluids to indulge in; however, if you do not want to drink that, you can drink chicken soup or tea. Many of the herbal teas out there are geared to improving or stimulating the immune system, which helps to knock out sinus infections caused by bacteria or viruses. I am sure you can find a good herbal tea that will fit your taste. Some of the teas I recommend are eucalyptus, ginger, peppermint, licorice, lemon balm and Echinacea. Do not mix these herbs with drug medications. If you are already taking some form of medication, I suggest you talk to your physician first. Some drugs can have adverse effects if mixed with certain herbs.

Most over-the-counter and prescribed medications come with side effects; however, there are homeopathic doctors who can prescribe medication that are more on the natural side and will not cause side effects.

You might want to quit smoking if you do smoke. Unfortunately, it causes sinus infections. Smoking does serious damage to the lining of the sinuses and causes swelling of the mucus membranes. Therefore, if you smoke, and you suffer from sinus infections on a regular basis, then you know what is causing it.

You will need to see a doctor if your sinus infection lasts for more than a week. This is considered a chronic infection. But if your infection lasts for a week, then you have an acute infection, which usually goes away on its own with a little help from some home remedies and rest.

If you happen to go see your doctor, he or she will prescribe you antibiotics. Antibiotics will have to be taken until you feel better, or until the recommended prescription runs out. Usually antibiotics are given when your doctor determines that your sinus infection is due to a bacterial infection.

There is a chance that your doctor might also prescribe antihistamines or decongestants that can be taken orally. However, this is only a temporary fix.

A good way to loosen the dried mucus associated with a sinus infection is through moisture or humidification. Your physician will not give this to you but suggest that you buy a humidifier that you can use at home.

Lastly, if the sinus infection is caused by an allergy, the only way to get rid of it is with immunotherapy that is a technique that stimulates your antibodies.

Sinus infections usually last a few days; however, depending on the cause and the severity, it could last for weeks. You have to take immediate action if you suspect that a sinus infection is on the way, whether it be acute or chronic. Many people do not think that a sinus infection is anything serious, so they tend to let it slide hoping it would go away on its own. Unfortunately, this is not true, sinus infections have been known to put people into comas and worse. Therefore, do not be complacent when you suspect an infection is coming on. Start out using some form of home remedy, if that fails consult your physician.
