The human heart is an amazing work of art. It is designed to receive oxygen-rich blood from the lungs and applies just the right amount of pressure to push it through the arteries and out to the body’s tissues.

When working correctly, there is just the right amount of pressure within the arteries to maintain a steady and even flow of blood. However, many things such as diet, stress, exercise, severe injury, or blood loss from menstruation can affect this pressure. Therefore, in order to keep this system operating at top efficiency, the heart makes continual and necessary adjustments throughout the day. These adjustments include the speeding up or slowing down of beats, and the increase and decrease of the strength of contractions. In addition, arteries relax and dilate or contract and constrict, and the kidneys retain salt and water (causing blood pressure to rise) or release salt and water (causing blood pressure to drop).

This system is so complex; it’s no surprise that fifty million Americans suffer from chronic high blood pressure or hypertension, and it is the most common of all diseases. To this day, it remains unclear as to why it affects African Americans more so than people of other ethnic backgrounds.

This disease is deadly because it shows no symptoms. It can stay undetected for ten to twenty years, while it does damage to vital organs such as the brain, kidneys, and eyes, all without warning. There are many public health measures geared to indentifying and treating people affected by high blood pressure. However, finding out if you are among the fifty million is not as easy as it may seem. Many people have different blood pressure readings throughout the day. For instance, some blood pressure readings can vary by twenty to sixty points. Some people find that their blood pressure is elevated every time they visit the doctor, an occurrence called white-coat hypertension.

The best way to make sure you do not have high blood pressure is to check your blood pressure readings on a daily basis. So, what is considered high blood pressure? If your blood pressure is constantly below 140/85, you are fine. However, if you are constantly getting a reading above this number, you should try to get it down through natural means as soon as possible. Depending on your age and health, you might want to consider going to a doctor.

Overweight people can drop their blood pressure to normal levels just by losing weight. If you live a sedentary lifestyle, try to incorporate exercise into your daily schedule. A daily forty-minute walk could do wonders for your health as well as drop your blood pressure a few points.

We all know that excessive exposure to sunlight can cause skin cancer, wrinkling of the skin, and aging of the skin. However, sunlight is very good for our overall health.

Understanding the power of sunlight is very important. Sunlight intensity is measured in “lux” or “luxes”, for example, on a bright sunny day outdoor light can reach three-thousand lux. However, an indoor environment brightly lit will provide only 400 lux. That is less than 15 percent of daylight brightness.

The human body depends on a natural body hormone called melatonin to enhance sleep. Throughout our adult life melatonin decreases, but peaks during childhood. Have you ever wondered why children sleep so much longer and better than adults do?

The body regulates melatonin production carefully. The light-dark cycle largely controls this process. During the nighttime in a dark environment, melatonin production is at its peak. This process is regulated by the pineal gland, which is located at the center of the brain. The pineal gland serves as a type of “clock” that regulates this process at the right time.

The body does not stockpile melatonin. In order to sleep well at night, we need a moderate supply. In order to boost melatonin output it is known that daily exposure to natural sunlight is a necessity. Manufactured supplements and artificial lights are a weak substitute, and are not worth the effort. The best way to get the melatonin your body needs is to get daily sun exposure.

Nevertheless, there are other benefits of getting adequate sunlight. Sunlight is a potent germ killer. That is why in the olden days people laid their blankets, quilts, and other items out in the sun to be sterilized. Sunlight also gives the skin a healthy glow and makes it smooth and malleable.

A sense of well-being is also attributed to sunlight along with the elevation of mood in most people. Although sun exposure is very beneficial, you must remember to use moderation when you expose yourself to direct sunlight. Acute and chronic depression can also be treated with sunshine along with exercise. Have you ever wondered why we feel so gloomy on a rainy day? During the winter months, try to get as much sunshine as possible.

Vitamin D is another great benefit of the sun’s rays. When the sun hits the skin, the body is able to manufacture vitamin D. The body needs vitamin D in order to pick up calcium from the intestines for use in the building of healthy strong bones. Osteoporosis, and both childhood and adult rickets can be prevented with adequate sun exposure.

Other benefits of sunlight also include:

Jumpstarts the immune system
Alleviates pain from swollen arthritic joints
Lower blood cholesterol levels
Relieve certain symptoms of PMS

Did you know?

- PMS, fertility, sleep, and your energy can all be improved with an extra hour of sun light a day.

- Mental health can be affected positively by seasonal variations in light levels. A great indication of this is a person who suffers with seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is treated with light therapy.

- Colon, breast, and prostate cancer are less likely to affect people that get more sunshine.

Although sunlight has many benefits, there are also risk factors. Sunlight can cause skin cancer, especially in light-skinned people. Everyone should be careful and use the necessary precautions before exposing the skin to sunlight over a long period. Healthy living tissue is burned when over exposed to the sun. Skin cancer could become a reality for people who get repeated burns, which can also cause irreversible damage. Premature aging, wrinkling of the skin, oil glands, and skin elasticity can all be damaged due to repeated sunburn and deep tanning of the skin. A high-fat diet along with excessive exposure to the sun is also associated with an increased risk factor to getting skin cancer.

Here are some guidelines for safe, healthy exposure to sunlight:

- Like wearing sunglasses on your skin, modest tanning can be protective. However, you must know your own tolerance to sunlight. Five minutes of sun exposure a day should be a starting point for fair-skinned people and redheads. Ten to fifteen minutes a day could be a starting point for darker skinned people. For most people the ultimate goal should be thirty minutes of sunlight a day.

- Sunburns raise the risk of both malignant melanoma (the deadliest form of cancer), and squamous cell carcinoma, which kills a combined nine-thousand Americans a year. Therefore, it is not wise to burn. If needed wear protective clothing, eyewear, and a protective sunscreen.

- Get your skin ready with proper moisturizing before heading on trips or vacations to hot locations.

- All the vitamin D you need will be provided by five minutes of sunshine on your face and hands each day.

- Lift your spirits, and improve your health by opening your windows and letting the sunlight in each morning.

- There is no substitute for the real thing. Each day should be spent soaking up some sunlight.

In many cases, you can feel a sinus infection coming, therefore, instead of waiting around for it to hit you full blast – do something to prevent it. Below are a few things you can do to help keep the beast at bay.

1. Try to keep the air in your home moist by getting a humidifier or an air conditioner, which regulates the temperature during hot and cold weather.

2. Electrostatic filters are also good for improving air quality in your home by removing the allergens in the air.

3. Strong fumes and chemicals can also irritate the lining of the sinus cavity, thus, causing a sinus infection. If you live close to an area that have irritants in the air, then it might be wise to move if you can.

4. Sinus infections are also triggered by alcohol consumption because it inflames the nasal and sinus membranes, which leave them exposed to irritation. Drinking in moderation is the key to help reduce the chances of getting a sinus infection induced by alcohol consumption.

5. If you smoke and you continually get sinus infections, it is time to quit. Smoking irritates the sinus lining, which inhibits draining of the mucus, thus, making you feel congested. Upon quitting, it will also be wise for you to stay away from second hand smoke.

6. People who travel a lot should cut down if possible on the amount of time flown from one area to the next. This is because bubbles of air within the body expand as the air pressure in the plane reduces. When this takes place, it could result in the blockage of the Eustachian tubes causing your nose to clog during the plane’s ascent or descent. If you have to fly, be sure to bring with you a decongestant nose drop or inhaler and use this before the flight.

7. Staying hydrated is another crucial step in preventing sinus infections. Drink plenty of water, juice, tea, or chicken soup. Liquids will replenish what the body lost.

8. Most sinus infections are caused by viral or bacterial infections; therefore, practicing good hygiene plays a major role in preventing it. You should take showers twice a day and wash your hands each time you go to the bathroom. People who cover their mouth after a sneeze should wash their hands also, because the germs remain on your hands.

9. Milk is also a culprit in promoting sinus problems. Although milk is a good source of calcium, it is no friend of the sinuses. According to studies, too much milk can thicken your mucus and cause nasal passages to narrow, which leads to headache and sinus pain.

10. Getting a flu shot every year is also a good sinus infection prevention method.

11. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. These foods are rich in antioxidants that boost your immune system and help your body resist infection.

12. Try to limit or eliminate stress in your life. Stress weakens your ability to fight of infections. Therefore, getting sufficient rest and relaxation is very important to prevent sinus infection.

13. Add supplements and/or multivitamins to your daily diet.

There are no shortages of sinus infection medicine out there. Sinus infection medication include antibiotics, as well as antihistamines, decongestants, nasal saline irrigation, leokitrienes, mucolytics, and steam inhalation. In addition, let us not forget about steroids.

As we all know, sinus infections can be caused by allergies, thus, a medication for sinus infection your doctor will prescribe you are antihistamines. However, depending on the severity of the infection, you can get it over-the-counter at your local pharmacy. This particular treatment comes with a down side, which manifests itself in the form of side effects. Grogginess and sleepiness along with dryness are all adverse effects that people experience taking antihistamines. Doctors counter this by including a decongestant, usually already added in the ingredients of the antihistamine that the he or she prescribes.

Next up on the list are decongestants, which are also readily available over-the-counter at your neighborhood pharmacy. Decongestants reduce congestion, nasal pressure, and nasal inflammation by slowing the amount of blood flow to the membranes, which in turn helps you to get back breathing through your nose instead of your mouth. It also lessens pressure in the sinus cavity and head, while easing discomfort.

Unfortunately, decongestants cannot do anything about a runny nose. In addition, people with high blood pressure, or heart related ailments should consult a physician before attempting to take a decongestant, because one of the side effects includes an increase in blood pressure.

People that get sinus infections due to asthma are usually given an anti-inflammatory prescription drug called leokotrienes. It is useful in preventing inflammation in the airway and sinus cavity. However, skin rashes, upset stomach, crusting, headaches, bleeding, and dryness of the nasal passages are all nasty side effects associated with this drug.

Another method that doctors use to treat sinus infections is mucolytics. It destroys or dissolves the mucus that makes it difficult for people to breathe; it is also very effective on coughs. It is available in liquid and tablet form. The most effective way to use it is to inhale it when placed inside a nebulizer.

After being treated with mucolytics, it becomes easier to breathe and achieve drainage. The mucus breaks up and is expelled through coughing. However, if you cannot expel the mucus through coughing then a suction apparatus must be used, which is mostly used for little children.

Steam inhalation and nasal saline are all also in the doctor’s playbook for treating a sinus infection. Fortunately, this is the only treatment of the latter that does not come with side effects. These treatments are safe and are not addictive. You can use these for about three to five days. They work immediately especially if your infection is a result of a viral attack.

Depending on how bad the sinus infection is, your doctor may decide that treatment with steroids is the best way to get you up and running. These steroids are used for inflammatory conditions and are known as glucocorticostroids. They are taken orally, by injection, or simply applied to the skin.

Known side effects associated with it are weight gain, increased appetite, increased blood pressure and blood sugar, sleep disturbances, mood swings, upset stomach, and fluid retention. Fortunately, these horrible side effects go away after you stop taking the steroids.

If you are suffering with a sinus infection you may want to look into sinus infection home remedies.

Are you suffering from a sinus infection? If you are – are you considering running down to the drug store to purchase an over-the-counter medication? Well, after reading this article, the furthest you will have to go is your kitchen. Your kitchen holds many sinus infection remedies that you can use to take care of the problem.

First off, it will be beneficial for you to drink a nice hot cup of tea containing any of the following herbs: Echinacea, astralagus, Oregon grape root, eucalyptus, or lemon balm. All of these herbs pack a mean punch, and can get you on the road to recovery in no time. These herbs are also well-known bacteria and virus killers.

The best thing about taking sinus infection home remedies is the ability to mix and match. Therefore, allowing you to experiment to see which ones are more effective. Drinking plenty of fluids is also recommended, preferably orange juice and/or water.

You can also get some eucalyptus oil and put it into a bowl of boiling hot water and inhaling the steam. If you have a steam vaporizer, you can use that instead; inhale the steam for about ten minutes, doing this will open up nasal passageways in minutes.

Ear pain is also prevalent with sinus infections; there are home remedies for that too. The use of certain essential oils can clear up ear pain in no time.

Mix two tablespoons of Pure Almond Carrier Oil, Five drops of Lavender Essential Oil, five drops of Pine Essential Oil, five drops of Eucalyptus Essential Oil and five drops of Tea Tree Essential Oil in warm water, which can then be put inside the ear at least three times daily.

In the case of facial pain, you could mix a drop of Eucalyptus Essential Oil, a drop of Tea Tree Essential Oil and a drop of Pine Essential Oil together again with warm water. Soak a clean cloth in the mixture and apply the warm compress on the face to alleviate the pain.

A sinus infection can also affect your ability to sleep. A great way to remedy this problem is to sleep with your head elevated. This allows you to get sleep while still promoting drainage, thus, keeping your sinuses clear. Blowing your nose when the mucus is ready to come out will also take that heavy feeling away from the nasal cavity area.

Taking garlic is also a great sinus infection home remedy. Garlic juice or capsules can be taken, which has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. You can also chop up some fresh garlic, put it into a bowl with some hot water, and inhale it two to three times a day.

Apple cider vinegar can be substituted if you do not have garlic. The potassium in the vinegar helps to reduce the production of mucus. Drink a cup of hot water and two teaspoonfuls of apple cider vinegar up to three times a day.

Although these home remedies for sinus infections are known to work and are highly effective, always consult a physician if things get worse.

Many physicians prescribe antibiotics for sinus infections. However, they are not always as effective as people may think. It is crucial to let your doctor know if they do not work, thus, he or she can prescribe something else that will be more effective.

Narrow spectrum antibiotics, and broad spectrum antibiotics are the two most widely used sinus infection antibiotics treatments used. Narrow spectrum antibiotics treat a specific type of bacterial infection, while the broad spectrum treats a wide range of bacterial infections.

According to studies, the broad-spectrum antibiotics work best; however, it is more likely to perpetuate antibiotic resistance. For this reason, doctors will prescribe the narrow spectrum antibiotics first, then the broad spectrum if the narrow fails to bring about results.

Here are a few of the antibiotics sinus infection treatments:

Aminoglycosides – These are classified as narrow spectrum antibiotics. Your doctor would administer this by irrigation or having you inhale it through the nose. A doctor, due to the horrible side effects that are synonymous with its use, should be the only one to administer this. Side effects include damage to hearing, sense of balance, and kidney’s.

Macrolides – This is also characterized as a narrow spectrum antibiotic, and is designed primarily to fight the cocci bacteria. It is mainly effective because it blocks or slows crucial protein formation in the bacteria. This weakens or kills the bacterium so that your immune system can get the upper hand. It is administered orally.

Cephalosporins – This is characterized as a broad-spectrum antibiotic. This one is administered orally or through the ear and is mostly given to people who are allergic or resistant to penicillin. Diarrhea and rashes are side effects associated with this antibiotic.

Penicillin – This is characterized as a broad-spectrum antibiotic. This antibiotic is widely used for many bacterial infections including kidney, and sinus infections. Penicillin does its damage to bacteria by slowing the metabolic functions vital to the bacterial cell wall formation and by stimulating the production of enzymes that eventually destroy the cell walls. The most commonly used are amoxicillin and amoxicillin-clavulanate.

Sinus infections are a lot different from a common cold. However, a cold can cause it. Therefore, your doctor will monitor you and if the cold induced sinus infection does not go away in seven days, he or she will prescribe you antibiotics.

Before your doctor prescribes any form of antibiotic, he or she must first ascertain what type of bacteria is causing the problem. To do this, the doctor will remove a swab of nasal discharge and let it grow into a bacterial culture in the laboratory.

Once your doctor is aware of what type of bacterium is causing the problem, then the treatment can begin. Most people after taking the antibiotics feel better after a day or two. Nonetheless, if you only feel better on the tenth day, your condition improved not because of the antibiotic but because your body was somehow able to fight the bacteria on its own.

Even the healthiest among us are not full of energy all of the time. Throughout the day, we all go through difficulties in relation to energy. Therefore, we turn to caffeine-filled drinks like coffee, or sugar filled items like soda, or chocolates to give us a quick burst of energy. These may be effective in the short-term, but in the long-term it will leave you drained. Not only is the energy short lived, these artificial energy boosters are just not good for us.

That has not to say that snacks cannot give us the energy we need. There are certain foods that we can eat that will give us true energy and not an artificial boost that leaves only after a few minutes. Here are some to try the next time you find yourself dragging:

* Bananas – A banana is a perfect nutritious snack when you are on the go. It is easily portable and tastes great. In addition, it can provide you with energy when you need it the most. Bananas are rich in carbohydrates, and they contain lots of potassium.

* Whole-grain cereal – Cereals that contain whole grains contain large amounts of fiber. Unlike simple sugars, the carbohydrates contained in those cereals provide energy gradually. That means that instead of a massive yet short burst of energy, you will get a more moderate amount of energy that lasts several hours.

* Bran muffins – A bran muffin also provides lots of fiber and carbohydrates. If you do not have time for cereal, this is a good alternative.

* Nuts – All types of nuts are wonderful energy boosters. They contain carbohydrates, protein and fat, providing for both quick and long-term energy increases.

* Peanut butter crackers – Peanut butter is high in fat and protein. Crackers contain carbohydrates. Put the two together, and you have an ideal energy-boosting snack.

* Trail mix – Trail mix contains nuts, with their multiple sources of energy, and dried fruits. Dried fruit packs plenty of fiber and carbohydrates into a small and easily transportable package.

* Spinach – Particularly in women, a lack of energy may be attributable to low iron levels. Spinach contains a great deal of iron, and it provides a number of essential vitamins.

* Yogurt – Yogurt is high in magnesium, which is a key player in energy production. It also aids in the metabolism of protein and carbohydrates.

* Dark chocolate – Milk chocolate is notorious for providing a short-lived energy burst. Nevertheless, dark chocolate contains less sugar, fewer calories and more beneficial antioxidants, while providing the same energy-producing compounds found in milk chocolate. Still, it is best to consume dark chocolate in moderation.

If you need a quick pick-me-up, coffee and high sugary snacks are not the way to go. Choosing the right energy snacks can keep you going for hours, therefore leaving you full of energy to perform your daily tasks at optimal efficiency. Natural energy is much better because unlike caffeine it will not abandon us after a few minutes and leave us feeling worse than we did before.

People who own pets know fleas and ticks very well. These annoying critters will at one time or another invite themselves onto your pet’s body; however, not all pets have a flea or tick problem, so this article may not apply to you. Nonetheless, there are many flea and tick killers on the market including collars, sprays, and powders, but are they safe? Not too many of these products are geared to killing fleas and ticks naturally.

Flea and tick products often contain chemicals called organophosphates, which work by disrupting the nervous systems of the pests. Some also contain carbamates, which have a similar function. These chemicals work well, but they can also harm our pets’ nervous systems, as well as ours.

Some pet owners simply do not think about the consequences of using such harsh chemicals. Others may believe that there is no other way to get rid of fleas and ticks. However, we can control them without going to such extreme measures. Try these tips:

* During flea season, vacuum daily. Fleas often take up residence in carpets, and a thorough vacuuming can seriously cut down on the population. Just remember to change your bag often.

* Bathe your pet often with normal grooming shampoo and warm water, and apply a natural flea preventative. You can make your own by adding two tablespoons of rosemary to two pints of boiling water. Remove from heat, let steep for 20 minutes, strain, and spray on. Let your pet dry thoroughly before allowing him to go outdoors.

* Wash your pet’s bedding frequently. Fleas and larvae are often found there.

* Mow your grass regularly in the summer, as ticks are fond of high grass. Try to keep your pet out of overgrown areas.

* Eliminate any potential havens for mice around your home, as they may bring ticks in. Dispose of piles of leaves and debris; keep woodpiles elevated off the ground, and store trash in metal containers with tight lids.

* Use a flea and tick comb on your pet at least twice a week. If you are in a hurry, try running a sticky lint roller over your pet’s head and body to pick up ticks.

* If you think you might have a flea problem in your home, use a flea trap. These simple devices use a light bulb to attract fleas and sticky paper to trap them.

* Try using nematodes to kill fleas. These parasites may be applied to soil in areas your pet frequents.

Ticks and fleas are a nuisance to us, and they are even more troublesome to our pets. However, dousing them with insecticide can be detrimental to our pets’ health as well as our own. With a few preventive measures, we can often eliminate the need for further treatment.

Here are eight tips on how to lower your blood pressure and reduce the need to be dependent on blood pressure drugs.

1. One key way on how to lower your blood pressure is to eat fewer calories. Losing weight is one of the fastest and most effective ways to keep your blood pressure normal.

2. Stay away from refined foods such as white flour, sugar, white potatoes, French fries, and sugary soft drinks. All of the above foods provide “empty” calories, which means they are usually void of nutrients and they lead to weight gain. In addition, eating to many of those foods fills you up; therefore, leaving little room if any for the right foods.

3. If you must drink alcohol, do not drink more than one 8-ounce glass of beer, or 4 ounces of wine, or 1 ounce of hard liquor per day. Consuming higher amounts of alcohol will result in an elevated blood pressure.

4. Eat plenty of high fiber foods such as flaxseed meal and other whole grains and vegetables. Although these foods will aid in a higher fiber intake, they are also rich in nutrients that help to lower blood pressure naturally. Fiber also makes you feel full; therefore, you will eat less and lose weight.

5. Eat foods high in the magnesium, potassium, and calcium. You can find these nutrients in foods such as nuts and seeds, green leafy vegetables, legumes, whole grains, tofu, bananas, oranges, apples, avocados, and melons. In addition, a study sponsored by the National Institute of Health, revealed that people who consumed foods rich in potassium, magnesium, and fiber had a lower occurrence of stroke.

6. Quit smoking as soon as possible. Cigarette smoke elevates your blood pressure by constricting arteries. It also damages the heart muscle and other tissues by limiting the amount of oxygen they get.

7. Eat plenty of foods that are rich in fatty acids such as salmon, cod, mackerel, and tuna. Omega-3 fatty acids have a relaxing effect on the artery walls; therefore, reducing blood pressure. They also thin the blood and makes it less likely to clot.

8. Try to incorporate exercise into your busy schedule. Exercise for thirty to forty minutes three to four times a week. It is a known fact that regular aerobic exercise lowers blood pressure and prevents heart attacks. In addition, adequate exercise is also critical in the reversal and treatment of many diseases.
