Foods That Cause Gout

Gout is inflammation and sharp joint pain because of crystallized deposits of uric acid. The joint most affected almost always seems to be the joint of the big toe. Men and postmenopausal women tend to be the most affected by this painful ailment because of a hormonal effect.

If you suffer from gout, then you know how painful it can be. The best thing to do is to stay away from foods that cause gout. Below is a list of foods that you might want to stay away from. Most of the foods on this list are foods that you probably enjoy to eat. However, you must make decision to stop eating the foods, or suffer more with the pain. I know people who suffer from gout and the pain is nothing laugh at. Therefore, without further delay...

Meat - All meat contains purine that transforms to uric acid within the body. Red meats like beef, lamb, and pork produce the most uric acid of any meat.

Shellfish - Crustaceans and mollusks produce a great deal of uric acid in the body.

Fatty Fish - All fish produce uric acid, but lean fish produce less.

Alcoholic Beverages - Alcohol works in reverse, it does not produce uric acid, but it blocks the body from getting rid of it. Therefore, causing the uric acid levels to rise. If you are a drinker suffering with gout, then you are doing more harm than good.

Stimulant Beverages - Caffeine belongs to the same family as purine, which transforms into uric acid within the body.

Brewer's Yeast - Brewer's yeast also has an association with purine which transforms into uric acid while in your body.

Legumes - Legumes also contain purine which transforms into uric acid.

Spinach - Although spinach contains no purine, it contains oxalic acid which intefere's in the bodies elimination of uric acid.

Fructose - Fructose causes metabolic disorders such as an increase in uric acid.

Mushrooms - Mushrooms also produce uric acid in the blood, but considerably less that meats. However, they should also be avoided.

Asparagus - Asparagus are one of the richest vegetables in purine, which transforms into purine.

Staying away from these foods will definately help you to avoid gout attacks.
